The reason why impacted wisdom teeth are a problem is that this tooth is not needed genetically and our jaws are getting smaller and smaller. As our jaws get smaller, wisdom teeth are forced to find a place for themselves and therefore cannot come out like other teeth. The wisdom teeth, which cannot find a place for themselves, push the front tooth and press, which causes crowding. In addition, they can easily become inflamed because they are too far behind and the surrounding gingiva is not in a normal anatomical structure.
Fully impacted wisdom teeth usually do not cause problems. But they need to be followed up with x-rays. Although they are fully embedded, they can press on the roots of the anterior tooth, damage it and cause some cystic formations around it. In this case, they must be surgically removed.
Partially erupted wisdom teeth are the ones that cause the most problems. Since they cannot come out completely, the piece of gum (hood) on them becomes inflamed due to the escaping of food residues and bacterial growth over time. As a result of inflammation of the gum around the tooth; pain, swelling, abscess occurs. They create a suitable environment for caries. In this case, they must be surgically removed.
